Help to protect your new thatch roof from fire with a fire retardant blanket. The fire blanket is made of glass fibre fabric and it stitched into the roof when it is thatched. The purpose of the thatch fire blanket is to prevent the spread of flames in the event of a fire breaking out in a thatched roof.
How a Thatch Fire Blanket Works
A thatch fire blanket acts as protection for your thatched home or building by slowing down the spread of fire through the roof. For example; if the fire begins inside the home (from an electrical spark for example) the fire blanket will stifle the flames on the inside of the roof by stopping them from reaching the outer layers of thatch. This stops the fire from sucking oxygen in from outside and therefore slows down how quickly it spreads.
Another benefit of a thatch fire blanket is that it reduces dust fall as the roof ages.
Does a Fire Blanket Stop Fire in a Thatched Roof?
Please note that a thatch fire blanket is not fire proof. It is designed to help to retard flames in the roof which reduces how fast it will spread. This gives you more time to attended to the fire. You should always have an up to date fire Rational Design in place. As well as detailing fire precautions, this document will explain the actions to be taken if a fire breaks out. It also takes into consideration access to water, water pressure and other important fire fighting factors.
How do we Install a Thatch Fire Blanket?
We can only install a thatch fire blanket in a newly thatched roof because it is woven in between the layers of the thatch during the thatching process.
We answer your Questions:
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL?
Putting the fire blanket into the roof adds a minimal amount of time to the process of thatching the roof.
CAN YOU SEE IT?
The fire blanket is completely invisible once the thatching is complete.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost of fire blanket depends on the roof size and location – please note that our quotation is based on the area of the roof, not the floor area of the building. Contact us for a quotation on your new roof with the fire blanket.
WILL A FIRE BLANKET REDUCE MY INSURANCE PREMIUMS?
Insurance providers require fire protection of thatched roofs. The requirements change depending on which company you are working with. They may need a fire blanket, fire retardant spray, a sprinkler system and/ or lightning protectors. It is best to find out what the insurer needs and then contact us for a quotation according to that.
DOES THE INSTALLATION COME WITH A GUARANTEE?
Bosazza Roofing & Timber Homes will provide a Certificate of Application which can be submitted to insurers and interested parties.
A THATCH ROOF NEEDS TO BREATHE. DOES THE FIRE BLANKET STOP THIS?
The fire blanket is perforated to allow aeration of the roof.
HOW OFTEN DOES IT NEED TO BE RE-APPLIED?
A fire blanket does not need to be re-applied at any time – only when the roof needs a complete re-thatch will a new fire blanket need to be installed.
