- Aesthetically Beautiful – designing thatch roofs is less restrictive than some other roofing solutions and you can incorporate beautiful flowing curves into the design.
- Great Insulation – Thatch roofs act as great insulators so they are naturally warm in the winter and cool in the summer
- Environmentally Friendly – using thatch and poles that are grown and harvested in South Africa reduces the cost of the roof on the environment. Some thatch types even grow more abundantly when they are being harvested!
How to Care for a Thatched Roof
When a thatched roof is built to the correct specifications, it should last between 20 – 30 years, the supporting structure should be permanent. Here are some tips to help you care for your roof so that you can make sure it lasts as long as possible.
Tips for caring for a thatch roof:
- Ensure that the type of thatch used on your roof is appropriate to the climate in your area – roofs in harsh climates will degrade more quickly than those in temperate climates.
- Cut back any trees that hang over the thatch or stop the sun shining onto the roof. Any water that runs off or drops from the branches can make the thatch rot more quickly, as well as shading the roof so it cannot dry out properly.
- A thatch roof needs to be brushed, filled and compacted at the right times throughout it’s lifespan (every 7 – 15 years depending on the climate, thatch type and condition of the roof). Always use a professional thatching contractor to do this so as not to damage the roof unnecessarily.
- As with any other type of roofing – make sure that the drainage valleys are clear of leaves and other debris so that the roof can drain properly.
- Cracks in the concrete capping can cause leaks in the roof so if the capping on your roof is cracking, call a professional thatching company to waterproofing and seal the cracks.
- Applying a thatch fire retardant will not only give you peace of mind in the case of fire and bring your insurance premiums down, but can also help to seal the thatch and prolong its lifespan.
- Try to address small problems with the roof early on so that they don’t turn into bigger problems down the line.
Always Use a Professional Thatching Company
The most important thing to remember is that a thatched roof should be built and thatched correctly from the start. While the Thatchers Association of South Africa (TASA) are working to set regulations for the thatching industry, there are still many rogue contractors offering services that are inadequate. Always ask to see examples of work and get references from previous clients when you’re looking for a reputable contractor. All TASA members are listed on the organization’s website: www.sa-thatchers.co.za.
